Non-Surgical Treatment
Verrucae Treatment with Topical Medicaments non-surgical verruca treatment at Foot Clinic NI
What are verrucae?
Verrucae (plantar warts) are small, rough growths on the soles of the feet caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They can be painful, especially when they appear on weight-bearing areas, and may cause discomfort when walking or standing. Verrucae are contagious and can spread to other parts of the foot or to other people.
Topical medicaments are one of the most common and effective first-line treatments for verrucae. These involve the careful application of specialised chemical preparations (such as salicylic acid or other caustic agents) directly onto the verruca to break down the infected skin tissue gradually and safely.
Common symptoms
- Rough, cauliflower-like growths on the soles of the feet
- Black dots (tiny blood vessels) within the verruca
- Pain or tenderness when pressure is applied (e.g., walking)
- Thickened or callused skin over the verruca
- Clusters of verrucae (mosaic warts) in some cases
Many verrucae resolve on their own over time, but treatment is recommended when they are painful, spreading, or persistent.
When to seek professional treatment
Professional podiatry treatment with topical medicaments is advised if:
- The verruca is painful or interfering with daily activities
- Home treatments have not worked after several weeks
- There are multiple or spreading verrucae
- You have diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced sensation in your feet
- You are unsure whether the lesion is a verruca or another skin condition
How Foot Clinic NI can help
Our HCPC-registered podiatrists in Bangor specialise in the safe and effective treatment of verrucae using topical medicaments. We provide a thorough assessment to confirm the diagnosis and create a personalised treatment plan tailored to your needs.
Our topical medicament treatment includes:
- Accurate debridement (reduction) of overlying hard skin to allow better penetration of the medication
- Application of high-strength topical preparations (e.g. salicylic acid-based or other specialist agents) in a controlled clinical environment
- Regular follow-up appointments to monitor progress and reapply treatment as required
- Advice on at-home care between appointments, including padding, footwear modifications, and hygiene measures to prevent spread
- Combination approaches where appropriate (e.g. with other therapies if needed)
This method is generally well-tolerated, non-invasive, and suitable for both children and adults. Many patients see improvement or complete resolution after a course of treatment. Please note due to tye viral nature of verrucae full resolution can not be guaranteed.
