What is Diagnostic Ultrasound?

What are ultrasound guided injections?

Ultrasound guided injections are a precise, minimally invasive treatment where medication (commonly corticosteroids with or without local anaesthetic) is delivered directly to the source of pain or inflammation under real-time ultrasound imaging. This ensures high accuracy, better results, and reduced risk compared to traditional “blind” injections.

In podiatry, they are particularly effective for foot and ankle conditions that have not responded to conservative treatments such as rest, orthotics, exercises, or footwear changes.

Common conditions treated

  • Plantar fasciitis / heel pain
  • Morton's neuroma
  • Achilles tendinopathy / tendonitis
  • Ankle or foot joint arthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Other soft tissue inflammations and nerve-related pain

When to consider ultrasound guided injections

You may benefit from this treatment if you have:

  • Persistent foot or ankle pain lasting several months despite other treatments
  • Pain that limits walking, sports, or daily activities
  • Localised inflammation confirmed by clinical assessment
  • A need for rapid, targeted pain relief to support rehabilitation

A thorough assessment by one of our podiatrists will determine whether an injection is appropriate and safe for you.

How Foot Clinic NI can help

Our HCPC-registered podiatrists in Bangor are trained and experienced in performing ultrasound guided injections in a safe, clinical setting. We use high-quality ultrasound imaging to visualise the exact area requiring treatment, allowing for pinpoint accuracy.

Benefits of ultrasound guidance at our clinic:

  • Greater precision and effectiveness
  • Reduced discomfort during the procedure
  • Lower risk of complications
  • Faster pain relief — often within days
  • Can be combined with other treatments such as custom orthotics, stretching programmes, or footwear advice for longer-term results

The procedure is quick, usually taking just a few minutes, and patients can often resume normal activities shortly afterwards (specific aftercare advice will be provided).
